Front and center is Morse, teaching his daughter Susan Walker Morse. Morse raised his attachment and expectations for his painting by placing himself, his family and friends into his work.

Lucretia Pickering Walker While opinions differ, the Terra Foundation believes the figure alone at a desk on the right side of the painting represents Samuel Morse's late wife Lucretia Pickering Walker.
